RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - German chancellor Angela Merkel made no apologies Monday for putting herself into the middle of the World Cup fray by jumping into any and all selfies snapped by Germany's newly-crowned champions.
Within an hour after the first German player hoisted the trophy at Maracaña Stadium, selfies of Germany's winning teammates appeared all over Facebook, Twitter, and other social media, all with one thing in common: Chancellor Merkel had inserted herself.
And perhaps because of heightened emotions, not every player was able to keep on their politically correct thinking caps.
"My selfie with the trophy," said Germany captain Philip Lahm, "is something I wanted to cherish, whether the photo stay in my phone or be blown up into a 100 by 80 cm poster. Instead, I have a photo with Merkel covering up half the trophy."
Said winning goal-scorer Mario Götze: "This isn't the way it was supposed to end."
