NY Governor candidate Rick Lazio is leading Andrew Cuomo in the latest poll. In a contest between the two, Lazio was favored by 48 percent. Cuomo was close behind at 45 percent.
The poll, conducted jointly by the Stern Business School at NYU and TheSpoof.com, surveyed 413 likely voters. Lazio and Cuomo had roughly equal name recognition and favorability ratings.
Cuomo's goons were quick to reject the poll results, claiming that the sample was composed primarily of Wall Street executives - Lazio's favorite special interest. They pointed to a poll of real estate tycoons a few days earlier where Cuomo was leading 60-20. Real estate interests are the major funders of the Cuomo campaign.
Rick Lazio nevertheless asserted that the poll result shows momentum is going his way. "New Yorkers are ready for change they can believe in. And since Barack Obama isn't available, I'm the closest they can get."
