DNC Chairman Howard Dean announced today that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have both given up any hope of winning the Democratic nomination. Their campaigns have given him notice within minutes of each other.
Barack Obama resigned because he felt he couldn't overcome the Jeramiah Wright fiasco. Hillary Clinton resigned because she felt she wouldn't get the votes and the delegates needed to catch Obama.
The Democratic Party is now in a bind. The only other candidate with delegates, John Edwards, resigned two months ago. Mike Gravel is still running, but is now with the Libertarian Party.
This could be the first time a major party has not fielded a candidate for president since 1793, when George Washington ran for his second term unopposed.
