NY Times reports: "Merrill ''Tony'' McPeak, a former chief of staff of the Air Force and currently a co-chair of Obama's presidential campaign, said he was disappointed by comments Clinton made while campaigning for his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, in a speech Friday in Charlotte, N.C." McPeak compared Clinton to McCarthy.
The obvious reference to recently deceased ventriloquist Edgar Bergen's dummy, Charlie McCarthy sent shock waves through the Clinton campaign.
Hillary retorted: "You can call Bill a lecher, an egoist or a slut. I certainly have on many occasions. But I did not marry a dummy, except maybe in his taste in women!"
Clinton campaign advisers compared this attack on Edgar Bergen's dummy to Dan Quayle's assault on Bergen's daughter's fictional character, Murphy Brown: "First, Candice Bergen's dummy and now her dad's. Who's next? Knucklehead Smith?! Is no dummy safe in election politics?!"
