California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today that he is running for the Republican nomination for the 2008 presidential election.
Schwarzenegger's candidacy was a surprise to most commentators, as it had previously been thought that he was born in Austria. The US Constitution requires a person to have been born in this country in order to be President.
In a recent visit to his parents, Schwarzenegger was going through some old boxes and found a birth certificate showing he was actually born in Florida. "I asked my parents about it," said the Governor, "and they said they did take a vacation to Miami around the time I was born."
A MySpace poll showed Schwarzenegger running in third place behind Ron Paul and Fred Thompson in a Republican primary. Rudy Giuliani attacked the poll as "absurd and extraordinary," and accused Ron Paul of not really being born in the US. "Texas was not yet a part of the United States when he was born," said the former mayor of New York City. Paul retorted that New York City isn't really a part of the US and never has been, in the eyes of most Americans.
