WASHINGTON, DC - In a stunning admission, the National Security Agency unlawfully gathered thousands of tons of garbage from Americans as part of a now-revised collection method, according to a 2012 secret court opinion.
The 3,287-page opinion, released by U.S. intelligence officials today states that the spy agency has been collecting as many as 56,000 tons of "wholly domestic" refuse every week.
In a strongly worded opinion, a federal judge expressed shock and amazement at what he saw as a pattern of misleading statements by the government and opined that the NSA probably violated a criminal law against spying on Americans.
