Washington DC: One of the best kept secrets in this politically leaky town is the White House Sandwich Shop. The café located in upscale Georgetown is undergoing an expansion to accommodate the increasing size of the lunchtime crowds of Obama administration political appointees and executive branch staffers.
Chef Charles, the owner, has been creating and serving somewhat offbeat sandwich fare since 1970. The sandwiches reflect the machinations of the political party in power, e.g. The Watergate (Republican, Nixon) and The Monica (Democrat, Clinton). A few of the current Democratic gastronomic delights on the menu are:
The Obama: A marriage of Brussels sprouts, German sausage, Spanish olives and Egyptian couscous served on Afghan bread in the shape of Air Force One. A domestically brewed Lite beer is recommended.
The Biden: A mixture of tongue and pigs feet topped with horseradish dressing served on a bulky roll. Truly amazing that it fits in a diner's mouth.
The Michelle: A vegan medley delight picked daily from a nearby garden served on a lettuce leaf. Fat free salad dressing only, no croutons, bacon bits or any condiments are used.
The Pelosi: A chef's surprise filled concoction hidden inside pita bread. The sandwich has to be eaten by the diner in order to find out what's in it!
The Reid: A sandwich prepared at the diner's table liberally containing everything served on rich bread. Throw away your budget and stimulate your taste buds with outrageous gluttony.
The Carney: A traditional baloney sandwich covered with globs of mayonnaise served on rye bread with a side of applesauce.
Chef Guy Fieri host of the Food Channel's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is to visit the White House Sandwich Shop this summer to preview the latest gourmet sandwich creation The Romney!
