A couple who had booked cheap seats with Cheap-n-air to Berlin for their wedding anniversary were asked to pay a surcharge of £150 by the airline company at Luton Airport this morning.
The wife was in tears as she was looking forward to this trip for a long time. Discussions with the airline staff ended in deadlock when a supervisor told the couple in front of hundreds of other passengers that they should not be allowed to have so much enjoyment at so little a price.
The husband called the Registry Office in Brighton where the couple were married and they annulled the marriage on the phone. The Registry Office sent an email confirmation to Cheap-n-air. The couple checked in without any problem.
A spokesman for the Brighton Registry Office said that they get many calls from the airports for annulments. They are planning to set up a divorce hot-line and to open up desks at major airports to help the low-cost airline passengers.
