Police call boxes like the one used in the BBC1 children's drama series Doctor Who, could be back in use again as soon as next year, says a top policeman.
The blue boxes, last used on Britain's streets in the mid-1960s, were taken out of commission after Saturday night thugs and hooligans regularly used them as toilets, and then pushed them over onto their sides.
The success of Doctor Who, however, who uses a police call box as a time-travelling vehicle, the TARDIS, has seen calls for its return, not least from women revellers and other late night drinkers who often get 'caught short' on their way to the bus stations and taxi ranks after a good blathering.
Chief Inspector Mick Balderdash of Humberside Police, who first suggested the return of the boxes, said:
"Once we've fixed the Metabolism Detector, reversed the polarity, and added the HANCUF-applicator and toilet seats, the TARDIS, I mean, police boxes, will be available to the public and police officers once again."
