It has come to our attention that there was an inaccuracy in our preview of the European Championship tie between FC Schalke 04 and Manchester United yesterday.
Under the headline Manchester United's Wayne Rooney To Be Subject To Schalke Winking Campaign we reported on the Gelsenkirchen side's plans to put the striker off his game: winking at him throughout the match to try to trigger flashbacks to his sending-off at the same stadium during the 2006 World Cup.
On that occasion he was red-carded for allegedly stamping on Ricardo Carvalho during England's quarter-final match against Portugal. Christiano Ronaldo famously winked as if to suggest that Rooney was the fall-guy in some deliberate effort to get him into trouble.
We accept that the Schalke/Utd tie was the first leg of the semi-final of the current tournament, not a quarter-final as we reported. We apologise for any distress caused to players, officials and supporters of either club.
City will take a 2-0 lead back to Eastlands for the second leg thanks to goals by Giggs and Rooney.
