After taking a seventh minute lead here in Graz in England's final World Cup warm up match, Japan eventually committed ritual hara-kiri by scoring two own goals.
Final score: Japan 1 England 2
But boss Fabio Capello was left with a bigger headache than whittling his squad down to the final 21 players who will be on the plane to South Africa - tracking down a lost crate of thick cut orange marmalade.
News of the missing marmalade filtered through to the England bench shortly after a raft of half time substitutions, and a clearly agitated Fabio Capello could be seen on TV coverage making frantic calls to try to track down the missing marmalade.
In a post-match interview, Capello didn't seem too concerned that the conceded goal had nutmegged Chelsea defender Ashley Cole, or about the second half thunderstorm which almost washed out the match. Preferring to concentrate on the missing marmalade, Capello told reporters:
"Of course we have a contingency plan to replace the lost marmalade, but my main concern is that we may be a little too late. The marmalade consignment is an important issue and it needs to be cleared up in order for the team to concentrate on the tournament."
The omens are not good for England should the marmalade issue remain unresolved. A consignment of marmalade has mysteriously disappeared before each England World Cup finals campaign since 1966.
More as we get it.
