Lisbon, (Lisboa) Portugal. Today - Liverpool FC were today rocked by the double whammy of being smacked down in the Premiership by lowly Middlesbrough and battered in the 'Footy Anthem Of The Decade' contest here in Lisbon.
The Liverpool entry, 'You'll Never Walk Alone' - a song from a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, 'Carousel' reprised in the 1960's by Gerry And The Pacemakers was bypassed by the judges.
"This is a disgrace," a tearful scouser informed us. "YNWA is a scouse anthem, it's been incorporated into the club crest and the Shankly gates at Anfield...it's the greatest footy anthem of all time like, it's obvious, the scarves, the flags...whorrya mean it's from an American musical? You're takin' the piss aren't ya?"
Sadly for our scouse friend, no, we're not.
It did come from Carousel and is about as scouse as the Empire State Building.
"So who won it then?" the tearful scouser, who had stolen and sold his neighbour's car in order to be here tonight, asked.
We informed him that the winner of 'The Footy Anthem Of The Decade' had in fact gone to AS Roma, for 'Roma Roma Roma' which wasn't lifted from an American musical production and actually features the club name in the lyric.
Francesco Totti accepted the award on behalf of the Curva Sud and announced that he harboured no plans for beatification.
More when we stop taking the piss out of scousers.
