The Football Association today contacted ITV and demanded to know how a goal was missed during a recent Premier League match. Their complaint relates to an incident when Amir Zaki missed an open goal in Manchester City's 1-0 win over Wigan on 17th January.
A statement to the press said: "We find it incredulous in this day and age that a simple goal in a televised match would be missed in such a fashion."
On ITV's website thousands of Wigan fans e-mailed in to complain. "At the end of the match the whistle went and then it went straight into the adverts," claimed one, "I couldn't believe it when I saw later that Zaki's goal had been missed."
Manchester City were one goal up but down to ten men and had to defend for the last 30 minutes. Wigan's best chance fell to Zaki when Lee Cattermole's deflected header came back against the bar, and, from six yards out and with the goal at his mercy, he nodded the ball into the back of the net.
Wigan Manager Steve Bruce explained later that it should have been the front of the net to count as a goal.
