(Vienna, New Germany) Fans of the victorious Turkish football team were in shock and awe this morning when it was announced in the capital, Istanbul, that not a single turkey could be found in the country.
The Turks beat Croatia 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, to set up a semi-final tie against hosts New Germany, but there was real panic amongst officials at the Turkish FA as it desperately tried to find one of the gobbling birds to use as its mascot.
Farmers in Turkey frantically searched their farmyards, and simple peasants scoured every nook and cranny of the land for a turkey, all to no avail.
An emergency meeting of the Turkish FA has been planned for later today, at which an alternate mascot will be discussed. Insiders say that this is likely to be a rat, of which there are billions in Turkey, or a sandal, of which there are even more.
