Adolf Hitler's exact whereabouts have been the topic of much debate since 1945. Yet nobody suspected that he would be a shock last minute selection for the Austrian team.
His attacking play once had the whole of Europe on the defense and the Austrians obviously hoped for a repeat performance. However, Hitler was never too convincing on home soil, and his past victories came away from home.
Before the Poland match Hitler tried to force his way into the opposition's changing room. Once out on the pitch he spent most of the match arguing with the referee, demanding that the Austrian substitutes be given more room on the Polish bench.
Against Croatia similar tactics were observed. However against Germany Hitler was rather subdued until scoring a last minute own goal and celebrating with the German team.

The Austrians have denied knowing anything about the war or Hitler's war record. It was all a long time ago, they say. And critics have drawn parallels with the selection of the England back four of Nelson, Churchill, Wellington and Terry. The latter was a surprise choice for the qualifiers.
For now, Austria are out. Hitler is rumored to be signing for an Argentinian side packed with experienced Germans.
