What is the big deal? Well, a genetic god walks among us! Dr. Venter has created "artificial life"! It is SO important for the world. Why? It just is. Especially for those science neigh sayers who don't want anything like this happening. Well ha! It happened. Still you ask, what is the big deal? He created Mycoplasma laboratorium. See, it has it's own latin name and everything.
It is actually just a new form of genetic engineering? There was not much real science involved that hasn't already been done in other projects? And the moniker "artificial life" might just be good p.r.? No. Dr. Venter, had his own genome sequenced for science and the greater good, he would never do anything just for public relations. And he has his own institute: The J. Craig Venter Institute to create this artificial life, so you know he is serious about his work. It could be used to create biofuels and save the world!
True, there are many steps to going from making just a bacterium to one that could actually do something for us. But hey, this guy has enough dough to get his own institute, so he will use that for the greater good. He made a whole bacterium with a million units in length, now he just has to bend it to his will. That part should be easy!
