Cape Canaveral, Florida (IP) - Scientists, the military, and artists combined their forces to create an eclectic group which created a ring around the Earth for scientific and aesthetic purposes.
They took an old Minuteman III missile and loaded it with a war head composed of non-nuclear materials. When asteroid OICU812 approached the Earth they shattered the asteroid into millions of pieces which created a set of beautiful Saturn styled rings around the Earth.
The procedure was planed so that the particles would not interfere with manned space flight and also satellite operations.
The explosion of the asteroid was visible from the night side of the Earth and its effects were enjoyed by folks all over the planet as the growing ring of debris put on quite a show for many nights on end. A specially designed spacecraft was used to gravitationally herd the asteroid particles into a perfectly circular pattern which otherwise would have taken a much longer time.
The ring will be used to facilitate radio wave relay technology and other scientific research so the project has more than just an aesthetic purpose.
