Rain stopped play - does football use the Duckworth Lewis method?

The England v Poland World Cup qualifying match was postponed on Tuesday October 16th after heavy rain. The Stadium, purpose built for the Euro 2012 tournament held in Poland and Ukraine during the summer, has a roof but never used it.

The match was rearranged for 4pm the following day, ending in a 1-1 draw. One match at Euro 2012, between co-hosts Ukraine and France, was suspended due to heavy rain, but play resumed within the hour after rain eased off and groundsman improved the surface.

One match that was played on Tuesday in League One was Leyton Orient v Hartlepool. It was a strange decision to play a match on the same evening as international football shown live on terrestrial television, a factor that would be sure to affect the attendance. However, the match was rearranged as the original game was postponed due to a fatal road accident that left the Hartlepool team coach stranded in traffic for almost three hours.

The last time an England match was abandoned was in 1995 due to crowd trouble inside the stadium at Lansdowne Road in a friendly against Republic of Ireland.

According a text to BBC London Radio sport show on Tuesday night (that was covering the Leyton Orient game) the last England match to be postponed (without play starting) was England v Bulgaria, also due to heavy rain, in 1979 at Wembley. The match was rescheduled for the next day, England winning 2-0.

In a 1973 episode of BBC sitcom 'Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads' Terry & Bob are trying to avoid the score of an England match, spookily against Bulgaria, before the highlights are shown on tv. After lasting all day without seeing the score, and narrowly avoiding a newspaper headline 'England F...' the lads learn the match has been postponed due to rain. The headline read 'England Flooded Out'

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
