Que Sera Sera ...

In 1900's three bacteriologists, by taking DNA from one type of bacteria and inserting it into another, discovered that the genetic characteristics are transferable. Now, can it be interpreted that life is essentially pre-determined and goes on according to a master plan.

However, Carl Jung, 1875 - 1961, talked of the 'principle of opposites'. As an example, he tells us that every wish immediately suggests its opposite. It might sound barbaric, but when we receive a message about our rich old auntie taken to hospital, we unconsciously may feel happy because her death will coincide with inheriting a large fortune.

Based on the principle of opposite, we may agree with the idea of body and mind, or an abstract entity residing in our concrete body. Furthermore, some of us believe in intuition which can be considered as an entity residing side by side in our body but unable to directly converse with us. This entity, when we are asleep, is awake, and sometimes it needs to give us a forewarning. At such instances, we experience some silly dreams. For instance, our neighbor's pipes are broken and water in leaking, or we see a branch of our persimmon tree half broken.

Next day, we find ourselves into an argument with a neighbor or relative. In the case of persimmon tree, we are informed that our mother-in-law has collapsed and taken to hospital. When we repeatedly see the same dreams and face the same consequences, naturally we consider the dreams to be foretelling.

The reason we see pipes broken is that the residing entity seems to be unable to speak to us in the same language. She uses her own silly symbols, hoping that we gradually learn the semantics. Regrettably, the forewarnings are not going to be cheerful. Perhaps it is the misfortunes that the entity is concerned with not the other way around. Sadly, avoidance seems to be impossible. If we decide to stay at home, we receive a phone call and the argument takes place. Now, if we cannot stop the event, then, it must be something in the past, and the past is 'water under the bridge'.

A bit of biology gives us motor nerves and sensory nerves. Additionally, physics teaches us conductivity. Now, we may compare the nerves to a copper wire which works on the basis of conduction. Here we learn that the initiation of an action and the required response needs an elapsed time. In car driving, it is called 'total stopping distance' which is comprised of 'reaction time', at least 0.75 of a second or 77 feet at the speed of 70 miles per hours and 'braking distance', 304 feet at the same speed, totaling 381 feet before we can stop the car. Note: When, mammals die, skin, hair and nails keep growing for a while.

However, etymologically what are the differences between 'foretell, forecast, prophesy etc'? All stress the announcement of a coming event. Intuition seems to have witnessed the inevitable past which is not forecasting. It is breaking the sad news. Que Sera Sera ...!

The story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
