With our native stocks of cod, haddock and plaice in decline, celebrity chefs Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and Jamie Oliver (as part of Channel 4s Fish Fight series) have been encouraging us to eat a wider variety of fish. However, the latest addition to the nation's seafood menu will surprise many - It's the humble Goldfish.
According to Whittingstall, Goldfish can be eaten as a nutritious alternative to popular chip-shop fair like scampi:
"They are cheaply and widely available at fun-fairs and pet-shops. Don't bother filleting them! About 5 or 6 goldfish coated with beaten egg, dipped in cornflour, and deep-fried in corn oil will make a delicious, healthy and sustainable alternative to other native fish species -Eat more goldfish!"
