OTTAWA, CANADA: Canadian Defence Minister Peter Mackay flew to Islamabad and promptly put his big gumboot in his mouth when he announced that Canada is "considering lifting an 11-year ban on arms sales to Pakistan".
Unfortunately, his "I'm-so-impotent" moment on the international stage has now turned into a "Mr. Potato-head" moment for the naive and utterly ignorant Cabinet minister, because the federal government of Canada is running interference strongly refuting his statement to the world media.
The communications director of the Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister confirmed that Ottawa's policy toward military exports to Pakistan will not change.
Seem our poor Peter Piper must have had too many pickled peppers when he got taken in by a perpetual Pakistani whine that the ban is considered discriminatory in Pakistan because Canada had lifted a similar arms ban against India in 2003. As if it isn't already common knowledge that Pakistan behaves like a spoiled child vis-a-vis its jealousy towards India by constantly throwing tantrums, demanding "whatever India gets, we too must get". Duh! Go figure!
Pity that Peter didn't have the international gravitas required of his position or basic guts to play some hardball and remind the Pakistanis they should start by behaving in an honorable and trustworthy manner to establish international credentials instead of making ridiculous demands. Instead, he proved how utterly ineffective he is in his role as a Defence Minister - what a disservice to his country which needs to regain its strong position on the international stage.
Canadian analysts can't understand why Canada allows itself to be bullied and cowed by duplicitous regimes. A well-known expert on India-Canada Affairs said: "Looks like Canadian foreign policy means we always back the wrong horse"
Opposition Liberals chose not to make any comments although a well-known commentator is believed to have muttered under his breath: "What a schmuck eh, no wonder Belinda dumped him. Lookit - I tell ya, this guy makes Tie Domi look like an intellectual".
