US immigration authorities are reporting a dramatic drop in the numbers of undocumented aliens crossing the southern border. La Migra wants to attribute the reduction to their security tactics.
Border wall advocates say its the barrier or rumors of its arrival that are keeping mojados high and dry on the southern banks of the Rio Grande. Recent raids on employers who hire "sin papeles" (the Mexican version of the Italian WOP) are credited with the reduced frontier flow.
I asked the Mexicans why they think the flight to El Norte has been grounded and many said it was simple: "Who wants to go to a country where there's no work? If we didn't want to work we could stay in Mexico and now that there's no paying jobs in the EU, we might as well stay home and be unemployed. At least we can get good Mexican cuisine!"
