The United States Congress is demanding that Mexico exceed the miserable job its own country has done in the protection of human rights. The US Congress is threatening to withhold funds from a US grant for drug intervention if Mexico can't stop Abu Graib and Gitmo type offenses.
Mexico responded to US threats with outrage. "We can torture and humiliate with the same or greater degree of cruelty than the US or any other advanced democracy," declared Mexican Human Rights Commissioner, Otro Torrquemada.
The commissioner went on to saty that his country has been in the business of denying human rights long before Cheney- Bush introduced torture to American foreign policy: "You people forget that we disappeared hundreds of innocentes during the student uprisings in the 60's. The Olympic Stadium is a human rights violation graveyard. Don't you dare insult us by suggesting that we cannot keep pace with your torture!"
