Bhaktapur, Nepal (AP) - For the past eight years ten-year-old Sajani Shakya was recognized by her people as a living Goddess, or Kumari. But local religious leaders have now stripped her of that title because she recently traveled to the US to promote a British-made documentary on Nepalese traditions.
Perhaps the young girl missed the memo mentioning that she was not supposed to travel (according to Nepalese tradition). Or maybe the local religious leaders forgot that Goddesses can do as they wish.
Two things are certain: Nobody can ruin a young person's Goddess Status quite like us; and if she were a resident of the UK/US and lost her Goddess Status, you can almost certainly bet that her lawyers would be getting involved right about now.
In the US we have a label for this phenomenon. It's called the 'Macaulay Culkin Effect' (as it frequently happens to child actors).
