Furious fans of American comedian Ben Stiller are furious after news that London's famous clock tower, named after the Hollywood superstar, will be renamed Elizabeth Tower in honor of Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee.
"The House of Commons Commission welcomed the proposal to rename the Clock Tower in recognition of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee," a parliament spokesman said in a statement. "[We] will arrange for this decision to be implemented in an appropriate manner in due course. We do though recognize Mr Stillers's contribution to British culture and the arts, his movies "Tropic Thunder" "Meet The Fockers" and of course "Zoolander" have made Stiller a national figure in the UK. Unfortunately though Parliament has swayed to pressure from the Palace and we have to do something for the Queen."
Stiller fans, quite rightly, are furious.
"This is a slap in the face for American comedy and for Ben" shrieked one angry American "What next? They going to stop calling the Albert Hall Albert because they don't like Albert Brooks anymore? Or even heard of him? It is simply disgusting that the British would do this to great American comedians. It shows a total lack of respect. Have they forgotten that if it wasn't for us they would all be speaking German? Then again, if Japan had not attacked Pearl Harbor would we have waded in? Doubtful, but that is not the point here.....it is about Ben Stiller!"
The 316-foot bell tower, which hovers over parliament, marks each hour with a series of distinctive bongs, let me explain 1 bong means it is one 'o'clock, 2 means it is two o'clock and so forth - the maximum number of bongs is 12.
Stiller said through a spokesman that he was upset but flattered as he had always assumed Big Ben was named after Armageddon star Ben Afleck.
