In New York state, a man is attempting to sue the state for denying him the right to marry his own mother. Eddie Puss of Scranton has a purely platonic relationship with his mom, but wishes to express his love for her by marrying her in a civil ceremony.
Mr Puss applied for the marriage earlier this year, shortly after homosexual marriages were legalised in the state. He says that he assumed that "if fags can get married, surely anyone can". He says that all the reasons for allowing homosexual couples to get married also apply to his own relationship with his mother. They love each other, they plan to stay together and they might even want to adopt a child together.
State officials refused to comment, and it is rumoured that they have also refused applications from other groups demanding marriage rights - polygamists, incest rights campaigners, and one man from New Jersey who wants to marry his horse.
