President Obama promised gays that he would repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" proviso that allows the branches of the military to dismiss anyone openly gay. And now, with the Pentagon reviewing this law at the behest of the President, the Navy is facing a dilemna.
As those familiar with Naval terminology know, the term "head" is used to describe toilet facilities on board ships. Etymologically speaking, the term derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship where vents cut near the floor level allowed wave action to wash out the facility.
In anticipation that "don't ask, don't tell" will be repealed, the Secretary of the Navy ordered that the signs above all toilet facilities be renamed, "Head or Butt" so not to discriminate against gay sailors who prefer one rather than the other for sexual relief.
