SACRAMENTO, CA - A new strain of hyper virulent, deadly Cryptococcus gattii fungus has been discovered in the United States a new study says.
The outbreak has already killed six people in Oregon and it will likely creep into northern California and possibly further, experts say.
In a what appears to be a double tragedy resulting from this strain, a family soup business was cited by the FDA after a California man infected by the new fungus was killed when falling into a vat of boiling water at the family's soup business.
The company was fined for selling mock mushroom soup.
Their business has been shuttered pending further investigation by the State Department of Agriculture.
