Metropolis, June 2008: When Superman started his career, in 1938, telephone booths were plentiful. Clark Kent could step into one anywhere (train stations, movie theaters, hotel lobbies) and become Superman.
Alas, modern technology has signaled the demise of the pay phone, due to more people having home phones and now employing cell phones.
Modern technology created the problem and has also solved it! While the number of pay phones has diminished to about one million, the proliferation of Porta Potties has drastically increased. In fact the number of Porta Johns (they go by various funny names) probably has surpassed the number of phone booths.
Granted, Superman must take extra care to make sure his red and blue attire remains pristine.
Expect to see the man of steel back in your neighborhood pretty soon!
Have a happy 70th birthday Superman.
