GOP presidential candidate John McCain said today that he thinks Ron Paul would make a good chairman of the Federal Reserve. McCain was speaking to a group of young Republicans in Texas Friday when he was asked about a role for Paul in a McCain administration.
Paul, a congressman from Texas, has been very popular with young voters. He has also been critical of the Fed's role in the US economy, favoring a return to the gold standard instead.
Sen. Joe Lieberman later clarified McCain's remarks. He said it was a reference to a role for Paul in the developing Iraqi government.
For his part, Ron Paul says he's not interested in working for McCain. Paul still hopes to win enough delegates to garner the GOP nomination. "It seems like a long shot, but we think we can sway some delegates at the convention."
Wall Street Journal columnist Bret Stephens suggested McCain's comments were designed to test voter sentiment to see if a Ron Paul connection might help in November. Either that or he's just getting loopier.
