A defiant Elliott Spitzer resigned as Governor of New York even while insisting he had done nothing wrong. "I did not have sex with any prostitutes." Spitzer said at a press conference. "At least not according to Bill Clinton I didn't. And unlike some Republicans I COULD name, I'm not gay. That should count for something, shouldn't it?"
But Spitzer stepped down as Stevie Wonder was sworn in as the new Governor of New York. This drew sharp protests from Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, who pointed out that he, not Wonder, was constitutionally entitled to replace Spitzer.
"My mistake." said State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo after swearing in Stevie. "After all, both David and Stevie are black and blind, and those people all look alike anyway, so it was easy to get them mixed up. But now it's too late to do anything about it."
As his first act in office, Governor Wonder announced that the official state song "I Love New York" was "not funky enough" and replaced it with "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life".
