La Guardia, New York (IP) - What began as a routine flight from New York to Fort Lauderdale almost turned to tragedy earlier today when a wing fell off of a 747 jet plane. Tragedy was averted by Northern Airlines pilot Mark Joyce thanks to some quick thinking on his part.
Captain Mark Joyce realized what had happened as soon as the wing fell off of the plane. He opened his side window in the cockpit and stuck his arm straight out of the plane into the air rushing by at 240 knots. His arm acted as a makeshift wing and he was even able to dip his arm to and fro and make it behave like a wing with control surfaces.
He brought the plane in for a perfect landing and as he exited the plane all of the passengers swarmed to his side and lifted him upon their shoulders. Tears of joy rolled down the faces of all present.
Saturday he will be the guest of honor at a New York City ticker tape parade and afterwards he will receive the key to the city and a brand new Mercedes Benz which he already says he is turning over to his wife, Grace Joyce to whom he has been married to for over 20 years.
Grace has announced that she will donate the Mercedes to a charity that helps feed the homeless.
