The fascination of many Kennedy Space Centre spectators with unmanned spacecraft which explode harmlessly has led organisors to rethink events at the complex. It has been calculated that giant Saturn Rocket powered roman candles and aerial explosions would be cheaper and more interesting to visitors than undistinguished missions to gather dust and stones from dead space moons for geologist geeks.
The centre has many facilities where thousands of skilled technicians historically prepared new space vehicles for launch. A popular tour is a bus tour, travelling to seaside launch pads along the shore, the tour stops to tell the story of the 150-year old Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, where legend says Dr. Wernher von Braun monitored the early rocket launches from a walkway at the top of the lighthouse.
Fast forward to the present day and lessons learned from Disney World make it obvious that the public likes colorful fireworks, the bigger the better and huge exploding $10Bn rockets fit the bill exactly.
