In an apparent U turn, Spanish Premier Mariano Rahoy apologised for ultra long border delays at the Gibraltar fromtier. After a ruling on compensation over the dispute, Spanish customs and exercise officials said that the checks would henceforth be proportionate and reasonable in future.

"It was never our intention to cause disruption to movement between the two countries and we offer our sincere condolences to all injured parties. I have drafted an official letter of apology to the Queen this morning. Our ambassador to the United Kingdom has applied for a meeting with Sir William Hague this morning to discuss the payment by the Spanish Government of the substantial compensation award."
