Florida senator Marco Rubio today told House Speaker John Boehner that wearing a sombrero was not a good way to attract Latino voters to the Republican party.
"Frankly, I was a bit surprised when he showed up wearing it shortly after the election,
"I thought maybe it was a one-time thing, but he's worn it every day," said an obviously dismayed Rubio.
"The Speaker realizes the GOP has to broaden its base," said Boehner spokesman Gerard Lintwhistle, "and Speaker Boehner believes this is a great way to reach out to Latinos."
He also said GOP members of both the House and Senate plan to wear sombreros during President Obama's upcoming State of the Union address.
"I think Latinos will really appreciate this gesture and they'll see that we really are the party of all the people," said Lintwhistle.
