Topeka, Kansas -- Westboro Baptist Church Leader Fred Phelps was arrested in a Motel 6 hotel room in a sting operation that lasted over 13-months.
In September 2011, members of the anti-terrorist unit within the FBI received information that Fred Phelps was attempting to form a partnership with the terrorist organization, Al-Qaeda. He had been monitored going to several known terrorist forums and posting to them for the organization to set up a meeting at which they could discuss the terms of their partnership. As to the rest of the Westboro Baptist Organization, there were no indications that any of the other members were complicit in the investigation.
After contacting Mr. Phelps and posing as a high-ranking Al-Qaeda recruiter, FBI agent H.E. Gotcha, set up a meeting at a local Motel 6 within the Topeka KS area. The entire meeting was videotaped for evidence and clearly shows that Mr. Phelps was enthralled with the terrorist organizations way of dealing with the "gay" issue.
Upon confirming the intention of Mr. Phelps to aid and assist the organization in the eradication of gays, FBI agents burst into the room and immediately arrested Mr. Phelps on charges of espionage, treason and attempted murder.
Mr. Phelps is currently being held in the Topeka City Jail house where members of his organization are denied any visitation rights. Marge Phelps has been placed under arrest from charges stemming from her disturbing the peace when she attempted to visit Mr. Phelps in his cell.
