Janitor and amateur chemist Roger Spoon blew up a tower block in an attempt to clean a sink.
Spoon told police he was experimenting with a DIY version of a popular kitchen cleaning fluid, which resulted in the explosion that levelled the flats last Tuesday.
Spoon was initially held under anti-teorrism legislation following the blast at Drab Towers, Dross Mill Lane. This morning, Spoon told Magistrates:
"I like the advert for that brand of kitchen cleaner that makes a bang, and then the dirt is gone. I figured it sounded like an efficient way to clean all surfaces at one. I made up some tri nitro toluene, put it in the middle of the kitchen and set it on fire. It definitely worked. The dirt is now gone."
Spoon's trial is one of the first that will be determined by lottery, following the government's introduction of the new Justice Lottery. Mr Spoon is said to be eagerly awaiting to find out wether he is innocent or guilty. The result will be announced on Saturday evening.
