Normal starfish look a bit like this.

A strange sea creature has been found washed up in Dumfries after the recent "Once in a thousand years" storms. The creature is believed to be of the starfish variety but has characteristics that usually only belong to a sea horse.

The creature, which is provisionally being called a Starhorse was found when an area of Dumfries called the Whitesands was flooded on Friday night. The area which is usually a carpark became a lake for two days because of unusually high tides and torrential rain.

When the waters receded on Sunday morning the carpark was littered with small fish and sea shells from the nearby Solway firth estuary. These were not unusual. These things had been washed up before, but what was unusual was the Starhorse.

A council worker who had volunteered for the clean-up operation said the Starhorse looked like a starfish but had a head and a tail like a seahorse.

"It was very strange. Its obviously come from the very depths of the ocean. There's strange things out there. People think its just a normal river but its not. Its tidal. We had a seal here three years ago. Never had one since or before, but there he was."

Katarina Frogpond (that's me) asked where the Starhorse was now. "Did you get a picture of him?" She asked hopefully.

"Ehm. No." Said the Council Worker. When I saw the starhorse, it was sliding down a drain. I tried to catch it but I wasn't quick enough. It'll be away back out to sea now. There's probably lots more where he came from"

Katarina Frogpond wasn't sure. She implied to him that she would believe in the Starhorse when she saw it.

"Well. I don't think you ever will" Said the Council worker. "It was the "once in a one thousand year storm" that brought him to our town, and I think it will probably be another thousand years before anyone ever sees him again."

"That's quite convenient for you if no one ever sees it again"

"Don't care." Said the Council Worker. "I knows what I saw."
