Pop diva Madonna has offered to adopt the children of the Home Secretary. Madge made the dramatic offer in Malawi, where she is already shopping for new additions to her family.
Asked why she had singled out children who have living, healthy parents, Madonna retorted: "Jacqui Smith's children may as well be orphans as their mother spends all her time round her sister's, and their father spends all his time, er, doing other things."
The singer has been criticised by international charities over her attempted adoption of a four-year-old in Malawi, whose name translates into English as 'Mercy', coincidentally the very word that Jacqui Smith's children are heard to cry whenever another scandal hits the papers.
Human rights organisations fiercely opposed to the adoption of 'Mercy' have however offered to assist Madonna in any way they can in her effort to secure the adoption of the Smiths' offspring. A spokesman said: "What's paramount in these cases is the best interests of the children, and we feel that these poor wretches have suffered enough in their native environment."
This is apparently a view supported by another celebrity serial adopter, Angelina Jolie: "Let's face it, having a single mom, even Madonna, has got to be better than the Smiths."
