The row over the alleged £10 porn movies rented on expenses by the British Home Secretary's husband is turning into a damp squib.
It appears that Mr Smith was actually too embarrassed to reveal the name of the movies he had actually rented, so claimed it was porn to take the public's mind off it.
It seems he had actually rented a copy of each of Redknobs and Broomsticks, Chitty Chitty Gang Bang and Mary Popouts. While he was somewhat concerned at the outset that neither Julie Andrews, David Tomlinson nor Dick Van Dyke appeared in any of the films he rented, he nevertheless persevered with watching them.
'When I originally saw the films as a child, I couldn't quite remember the part in Chitty Chitty Gang Bang where the naked maids gathered on the bed with a load of naked men, and I do distinctly remember a flying car. And I don't remember there being so many penises in Redknobs and Broomsticks.
'But than, I was very young when I originally saw the films. So I have to confess I didn't think much of it at the time.
'I just apologise for putting them on my wife's expenses. It's just that it gets confusing, what with claiming for all our other homes and for travelling expenses and having to shop in John Lewis all the time.'
