Clothing manufacturers have been told to reduce waistband sizes of all clothes produced in a bid to solve the obesity epidemic gripping the UK.
The new regulations coming into effect on 1st January 2009 mean that trousers, skirts and such like will be allowed a maximum waist band of 27 inches for women and 32 inches for men.
The move has been criticized as extreme by the Waisters for Justice group. A spokesman from the action group, Mike Lard, said "where does this leave millions of people who have naturally big bones around their tummies?"
Waisters for Justice and clothing retailer George at Asda plan to demonstrate against the decision outside parliament this afternoon. George whow works for Asda said in a statement last night, "this nonsensical decision will cause humiliation for people who will be forced to squeeze themselves into tiny clothes". In preparation for the new regulation, Asda plan to launch a line of girdles for their larger customers.
The new ruling is designed to force people to lose weight or face the humiliation of not fitting into clothes properly, with excess flesh bursting the seams of their clothes. The Government claim they want to reduce the burden on the NHS caused by obesity.
