Pals of Karen Matthews, 32, think she may have got the idea from a seedy, downmarket UK rag that has just been sued in connection with another child's disappearance.
A family spokesman said today that police may have arrested her "because she's had seven different children by nine different fathers."
Matthews is denying any tabloid ruse on the grounds that she illiterate.
"None of this would ever have happened if they'd been holidaying in the Algarve, of course," neighbor Mrs Doris Daft said today.
