Ageing rocker Sting, real name Gordon Sumner, was released on bail yesterday at Primrose Hill police station after a public feud with a market-stall owner degenerated into a violent brawl.
The millionaire singer, 64, was accused of trying to bribe the stall owner into becoming the sole supplier of mung beans for the Notting Hill area. It is believed that Sting's wife, Trudie Styler became obsessed with harvesting the tasteless pulse in 1994 after her book on Tantric Knitwear failed to make a mark on the bestseller lists.
There are rumours circulating that the couple have over 70,000 sacks of the beans in the conservatory of their north London mansion.
The police were called to the scene at 11.30 yesterday morning to find Mr Sumner brandishing a 100 Euro note in the face of the disgruntled trader, Mr Grozcki , shouting "You'll regret this matey balls!!"
Shortly afterwards, PC Purbright of the Metropolitain Police had to intervene as Mr Sumner attempted to attack the trader, managing to engage Mr Grozcki in a headlock and wrestle him to the floor.
Eyewitnesses claim that the Geordie vocalist was removed from the scene under police escort squealing "You're not the police, I am!" Mr Grozcki has pressed charges and the case will go to The Old Bailey.
