It's six years since Arsenal won a major trophy, much to the chagrin of Aresene Wenger. The Gunners were expected to make it all better this afternoon as they took to the field at Wembley this afternoon for the Carling Cup final as 1/4 favourites against Birmingham City.
Sadly, for the Gooners, that was the precise point at which a good day turned bad.
Zigic opened the scoring, wrong footing the defence as he changed the direction of a header from a corner to make it Arsenal 0 Birmingham City 1
There was no time for the Blues to bask in glory though, as Samir Nasri netted to equalise for the Gunners.
A pulsating contest ensued, with Arsenal hitting the woodwork and testing Ben Foster on several occasions.
Then came the decisive moment in the 89th minute - Martins found himself with the ball at his feet - following a cock up between back pedalling Arsenal defender Koscelny and the goalkeeper - facing an unguarded net, and in workmanlike fashion, side-footed home the winner.
With a plum.
Sorry - aplomb.
There will be much eating of the balti in Brummagem tonight, and much wringing of hands in North London.
Ooh! To be a Gooner!
Six years...and counting...
More as we get it.
