At least two referees at the World Cup Games have been dismissed and are still being interrigated by South African officers after Baruti Goitsemednse admitted Friday that he had been paid by gamblers in his calling of a round one game.
"These are people who bet heavily on the game and can afford to pay off a low-paid referee to call the close ones for the team that they are betting heavily on", stated one officer.
Goitsemedse stated that it was a way for his family to have a better life for many years. "And these, they are only games. I do my best for my family, not snobbish players and fans who do not have to worry about such things, as many of us here have to consider."
Meanwhile the other referee arrested, Joost Kafentse admitted that he too had taken some money.
"But it wasn't the money, although we certainly need it", stated Kafentse. "It was the threats made against my family. These men say that if I do not take it, they will pay a police officer to look the other way, should my family have a visitor come to my home while I am away."
Meanwhile, police say that Koman Coulibaly, who made the call against the US that cost them a win, is not being questioned.
"He seems an honest man who made a mistake as several players have done during the games", stated one officer.
