West Midlands Police are investigating one of their own officers, after CCTV footage of a pitch invasion at a Birmingham City game at the end of last season revealed a familiar face.
Birmingham beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1, but even this wasn't enough to keep them in the Premier League, and they were relegated. Angry protesting fans then invaded the pitch.
Police officers reviewing the tape this week, however, noticed that one of the hooligans was none other than off-duty PC Phil Fepigg, a known City supporter, and former member of The Zulus, a formidable fighting unit from Birmingham's shady past.
A spokesman from West Midlands Police said in a statement:
"It has come to our attention that one of these ruffians encroaching onto the playing surface may have been one of our own officers. We think, however, he may have been undercover. At least, that's our story, and we're sticking to it."
