Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, has shocked fans of the Old Trafford club by announcing his intention to retire early - at about 10pm tonight after Springwatch, which is presented by Bill Oddie.

Ferguson, 79, told fans on the United website that he was handing the reins over to token Spaniard Carlos Queiriierieirieries (possible spelling error) after tonight's show which features some barn owls, an osprey and a ring-nosed parakeet.

The former Goodie shows viewers how to catch one of the elusive barn owls, and how best to cook it, with the aid of quirky survival chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who, himself, is an occasional Manchester United fan.

The show goes out on BBC2 at 9pm.

The funny story above is a satire or parody. It is entirely fictitious.
