As a side effect of recent studies on how to keep human beings from aging, scientists in the United States and Britain say they have the ability right now to prevent kittens from becoming cats and puppies from becoming full-grown dogs.
"Oh they will age but very slowly", stated Doctor MacKenzie of the Mayo Clinic Auxiliary in Wisconsin. "Also, they may only live to be five or six years of their lives, but that will be 30-40 of our lives."
Dr. MacKenzie stated that he didn't mean to confuse people but merely to speak in layman's terms.
"The animals will wear out over that period of time but still that's a long time considering their age limit at the present time. Plus there are always diseases and accidents."
However, most pet owners say they are thrilled that they could not only have a favorite pet for that many years but that the pets staying at the puppy/kitten stage would be great also.
The lab spokesman went on to say that it wasn't possible to extend the life of those pets we already have because the process must begin soon after conception while still in their mother's womb.
When will there be a breakthrough with humans?
"We're studying that closely. One drawback is the possible population explosion with people living for 200 years or longer! But if we are to ever take long journeys into space, this field of research must continue."
