Anchorage, Alaska (IPP) - The north pole turned black with meterorites from the recent Quadrantid meteor shower.
The rare phenomenon came to light as scientists from NASA flew aboard a Google jet over the Arctic region in an effort to make direct observations of the meteor shower which was best seen in the extreme northern regrions.
One area was so thick with meteorites that the plane was able to use it as a runway on which it made a landing. As the scientists stepped out of the jet they could hear the super heated meteorites sizzling as they made contact with the snow and ice.
A C-130 aircraft was called in to make a landing and carry off as many meteorites as it could carry.
One technician aboard the C-130 was injured when a snowball fight broke out and a meteorite was inadvertantly placed inside a snowball which hit the man in the head. Luckily he was wearing a helmet and the injury was not serious.
