In a bid to lift national spirits and world standing the Greek Government has announced plans to send a manned space ship to Uranus by 2020.
Speaking from Athens, Greek Space Administration CEO Apollo Kakas made the announcement at a press conference this morning.
"Greeks have been looking at the Rings of Uranus for over two thousand years. It was Homer Moonopedus who first discovered and names Uranus in the twelfth century BC. Ever since, our nation has dreamed of taking a closer look at the Rings. The opportunity to make our dream come true is upon us. The European Economic Community is giving Greece a financial shot in the arm and we plan to use that money to get a Greek to Uranus by 2020".
Responding to questions from the press gallery about the timing of this announcement, given the dire financial issues Greece currently faces, Mr Kakas said "When 16% of Americans are living below the poverty line, has anyone questioned NASA's multi-billion program? No. And Greece is equally determined to get to the bottom of the Rings."
